There are some pretty meaningful ways to build life skills.

From when I was very young, my mother and I would sew halloween costumes.  We would pick out a pattern and she would show me how it all worked. As I got older, I started to design and be the “creative consultant” and somehow she would always make it look the way I had envisioned.  All along the way she taught me different sewing techniques and we spent some great quality time. I learned some great life skills like planning a project, following directions, problem solving and yes of course sewing!! We carried this through with my own children and it is one of the best memories we have built together.

Tip #6  Make Memories

To add on to the skill building tip from yesterday, I encourage you to find a project or task that you can do with your children that can open up communication, make memories and still build skills.  In addition to sewing and cooking, perhaps going through old photos and sharing stories about trips, family members and old friends. Think about starting a garden, painting a room or restoring a piece of furniture.  Maybe create a model car, ship or rocket. Work as a team to clean or maintain a car. Perhaps there is a closet or drawer that needs cleaning out - do it together and figure out what to donate, sell, and keep.

These types of activities can teach a variety of skills, open communication, and build connections with your loved ones that can stay with you for a lifetime.
