It’s the holiday season…..
Yes, once again the holiday season is upon us. I know that the holidays may look a little bit differently than they have in the past. It may be that this year you may not get to see certain loved ones or be able to follow through on traditions that you may have been used to for many years. While it may not be our usual, we can still make it special.
Some tips that can be helpful for navigating an unusual holiday season:
Try to hold onto as many traditions and rituals as you can. If you usually decorate, go for it! If there is a certain type of food or treat you enjoy, make it!
Maybe this is the year to try some new traditions and rituals. Maybe try gifting in a different way or try a new recipe that everyone can share in making. Perhaps there is a movie that you can all watch together or a new game you can all play. Declare a pajama day or if you’ve been in PJs for much of the year like most of us then maybe it’s a Dress Up Day!
Perhaps simplifying is another strategy. Do less, make less, buy less and enjoy the present moment. I personally enjoy having a warm cup of tea and just like to look at the holiday decorations in my home. A simple pleasure.
Connect with loved ones. If you are able to safely visit with family and friends do that. If distance or safety is an issue then facetime, skype, zoom or whatever you need to do to connect.
Take care of yourself! Keep therapy appointments, rest more, read a book, enjoy your favorite foods, or create something if that is your thing. Do something that brings you joy!
These are just a quick set of ideas. What else do you do?
Regardless of your strategies for this holiday season, please stay safe and healthy!
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!
